With so many new products being launched at Musik Messe in Frankfurt, it can become difficult to separate out the best new products to come out of Europe's biggest music retail trade show. We've taken some of the strain by picking our top five of the new tech products that were launched this year.
Roland Jupiter 80
Roland's world-famous SuperNATURAL sound engine technology is at the heart of the Jupiter 80 and together with the 76 key touchscreen-driven externals combines to give the customer the analogue modelling and digital synthesis that they have come to expect from Roland. The sound engine feeds back on the player's technique to produce a real performance sound whether in the studio or on stage. And with a huge range of realistic acoustic instruments to play with and SuperNATURAL's seamless note-to-note expression, musicians will love Roland's new offering.
Korg Monotribe
The next step from the Monotron, Korg launched the Monotribe at Musik Messe. Featuring aspects of the Electribe and improved features of the Monotron, the Monotribe provides a complete package of synth, rhythms and sequencing. It is more powerful, more compact and more user-friendly, with built-in speakers and battery power too, making it a highly playable and portable synthesizer. The Monotribe has a multi-mode ribbon keyboard for greater versatility, three-part analogue rhythm section with bass drum, snare and hi-hat and classic analogue components such as three wave shapes and an envelope generator. For ease of use during performance it has Electribe-style sequencing with step editing and a Flux feature allowing flexible creation of synth parts in sequence. Auto-tuning prevents drift in pitch as in older synths. The Monotribe also has Sync In and Out jacks for use with multiple units and the filter has the added bonus of being able to pass other audio sources through it for a total performance effect.
Korg Wavedrum Mini
Also from Korg is their new compact and lightweight Wavedrum Mini. Again with a built-in speaker and battery power, Korg are obviously focusing on portability of their products at present. With 100 ready-to-use sounds, 100 rhythm patterns, 10 preset audio effects and an on-board looper this is a percussion synth that will delight professionals and beginners alike. The Wavedrum Mini has a revolutionary new sensor clip, which allows the musician to play two sounds in unison for a unique original sound. One sound is produced from the sensitive and responsive pad, while the sensor clip can be attached to any surface or object, from leg to table top to dinner plate, the result being an amazing new versatility of sound.
Yamaha MOX6 and MOX8
Yamaha have yet again managed to produce a heavyweight, professional performance product that is affordable for the budget musician. The next stage in their Motif range, the MOX6 and MOX8 are complete package synths. They both have over 1200 voices and over 350MB of waveforms from the Motif XS. These can be enhanced and edited with Yamaha's XA (Expanded Articulation) technology and VCM capability, great for recreating new or classic synth sounds. Both the MOX6 and MOX8 also have an on-board multi-track sequencer and arpeggiator patterns. They integrate with other audio sources via the 4-in-2-out USB Audio/MIDI interface. Differences between the two are mainly external. The MOX6 has a new 61-note semi-weighted keyboard, making it incredibly light, while the MOX8 has an 88-note fully-weighted Graded hammer keyboard.
TC Helicon Voicetine Singles
TC Helicon added three new vocal and processing effect pedals to their Voicetone range at Musik Messe. The H1 is an intelligent harmony pedal with a guitar-sensing element to help keep harmonies in tune. For non-guitarists H1 has a key selector and can be switched on and off via the MP75 microphone. With it's megaphone and distortion effects, the X1 gives a modern, edgy quality to performances and all under the singer's control. Again a switch on the MP75 turns the device on and off. The E1 combines echo and tap delay effects for a classic vibe. Twelve echos and delay are all controlled by a switch on the microphone or foot switches.
