Guitar Tabs For Beginners (Part 1)

Hey everyone, and welcome to our latest article. We are doing what we can to help you learn how to play guitar. In this article we will be talking all about tab music reading. Why it's important and how it can shave years off of your learning time.
TAB music notation is nothing new, it has been widely used for organ music notation since the 1300s. TAB music notation is a viable way to learn to play guitar.
What Is Tab (tabulator)? It is a different way to read music. A common way to remember what TAB Stands for is T= Treble A= Alto B= Bass.
TAB sheet music for guitars usually has a line going left to right. Each line represents a string on the guitar. The bottom line on the tab music represents the low E string on the guitar and the top line on the tab sheet music is the high E string.

Now that you know what each line is, now we need to talk about what the numbers on the lines mean. So let's say that there is the #5 on the first line of the tab sheet music. This would symbolize the A note on the low E string. As you can see below this is a very easy way to learn how to read music. It is the same for each line and number.

Guitar Tab Chord Reading
Reading chords in TAB is basically the same as reading it in note. The main difference is that instead of playing a single note you play multiple notes at the same time. It is important to remember that you should only play the strings that have numbers on them.

Guitar Tab Symbols
So now you know the basics to reading tab. Lets talk about what all the symbols you see on top of the tab notes. Each one of the symbols below is a representation of a motion to be done on the guitar. It is important that you memorize each one of these for sight reading. In doing this it will make it a lot easier for you to learn to read sheet music.
h - hammer on
p - pull off
b - bend string up
r - release bend
/ - slide up
- slide down
v or ~ - vibrato
t - right hand tap
What do all these symbols mean and how do you use them?
Below we will go through each one of these TAB symbols.
A hammer on is done by playing the first note and then just fretting the second one. You do not play the second note with the pick. Example: Using your left hand you want to put your index finger on the 5th fret and play the note, then while the note is ringing out put your ring finger on the 7th fret that is the basics to a hammer on.

A pull off is the opposite as a hammer on. Instead of playing the 5th fret first you would play the 7th fret then let it go while still holding the 5th fret.

A bend is represented by the letter b after the number that needs to be bent. All the bends should be made one step up unless otherwise noted. What this means is that the highest note in the bend should be the same as a note that is played 2 frets up. Example: if you bend on fret 5 it should sound like fret 7 at it's highest point of the bend.

A release bend is similar to a standard bend except when it is released, you should drop to the note # that is represented in the tab. Example Bend on the 7th fret and the release the 7th to the 5th fret after bend,

A slide note is played by striking the first note and then while the note is ringing out you slide your finger to the note that is indicated.

A slide down is similar to a slide up but the opposite way. You would do this by playing the first note and sliding down to the note indicated.

Vibrato can be indicated two different ways, it just depends on who is writing the tab. Vibrato can also be played two different ways. The first way is to use the whammy bar, you just play the note and then use the whammy bar up and down quickly. The second way is to do the vibrato is with your finger. You simply just play the note and then quickly bend the string up and down.

Tapping is a way to play a note without picking it with your right hand. To tap a note you simply just place your left hand over the note you want to tap, then you tap it lightly with the right finger this will sound the note.

The Top Female Rock Songs - May I Surprise You?

When I ask my friends to name their top female rock singers they always name Pat Benetar, Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, Tina Tuner and maybe also bands like Heart or even the Pointer Sisters. While there is nothing to say against these nominees I am all out for presenting you upcoming and recent talent. Before you read on close your eyes and think of the first two or three female rock singers that have emerged through the past decade. What do you come up with?
To mind comes Anastacia who has a versatile voice that could sing rock as well as R&B or blues. Though her latest album released in 2008 is not a rock album, she definitely could have made it to this list. Just think of -- Left Outside Alone.
Same with Pink who won the Grammy Awards in 2004 for her song --Trouble, I believe the last woman so far to have been presented with a Grammy for lead vocal rock. And who has proved her rock-ability on her 2006 album -- I´m Not Dead including --You And And Your Hand.
But my favorites include neither of them! Here it is, my personal list of top female rock songs:
1. I Get Off -- by Halestorm from the album Halestorm (2009)
Lzzy Hale of Halestorm has one of the most powerful rock voices at the moment, and almost any song from the album could have been named here. Halestorms music style is somewhat classic rock oriented but very modern sounding, melodic and powerful. The song sounds just like it is named in fact.
2. Ghetto Love -- by Spinnerette from the album Ghetto Love (2009)
Lead singer Brody Dalle has a dirty punky voice, she can sound sensual, erotic and very hard almost at the same time. Spinerette´s music is more punk oriented alternative rock. Brody Dalle also produced several great rock songs with her former band The Distillers. Although this is nothing to do with Brody Dalle at all her image and music reminds me of the comic --Tank Girl.
3. Cassie -- by Flyleaf from the album Memento Mori (2009)
Lacey Mosley´s voice is slightly reminiscent of Alanis Morisette, she could easily bring off mainstream pop songs but Flyleaf lay down an instrumental background situated somewhere between post-grunge and nu-metal, very melodic and still hard rocking alternative modern music.
Whatever you think of my choice of top female rock songs you will agree that there is a lot more ladies of rock out there to be discovered, and it is a lot of fun doing just this.

Bartolomeo Cristofori of Padua was the one who invented the piano. He was an Italian musical instrument creator from the 18th century. Three of his original pianos still exist. They have certainly surely survived the test of time since they were made in the 1720s.

Mel Bay - The Most Incredible Jazz Music Guitar Player Ever!

Jazz guitar player Mel Bay was born on February 25, 1913 in the small Ozark Mountain town of Bunker, Missouri. He bought a Sears guitar at the age of 13 and several weeks later played his first "gig." He recalled playing right up until his fingers were raw! Mel took up the tenor banjo shortly thereafter and continued to master both instruments. Throughout his teen years Mel played with a wild assortment of bands and characters in rural Missouri. Perhaps no "gig" was as unusual as the job he landed with, in Mel's own words, "a snake oil salesman." This flamboyant peddler would pull his ostentatious Pierce Arrow automobile, complete with steer horns installed on the grill, into the center of a small, rural town. Mel would sit on the car and play up a storm on the tenor banjo. Soon after a crowd gathered, the peddler took over and started extolling the miracles of his "wonder elixer."
In 1933 Mel Bay moved to St. Louis and commenced his professional career. He performed with a lot of local and traveling bands. Additionally, he landed staff guitar employment on various radio stations. Mel fronted his own trio (piano, bass, guitar) and played steadily for 25 years! He was equally adept on most fretted instruments and played mandolin, uke, Hawaiian guitar, tenor and plectrum banjo professionally.
Whilst Mel was actively pursuing his playing career, he continued to tutor as many as 100 students a week. He decided to commence composing instructional books of jazz guitar tabs and jazz guitar tablatures owing to the problem encountered by guitarists at performing great sounding chord forms in rhythm sections and due to the mediocore note reading ability prevalent amongst guitar performers.
Soon after World War 2 Mel was asked to publish instructional tutorials on guitar for soldiers wanting to learn music under the GI Bill. In 1947 Mel formed his own publishing company and authored his landmark initial book titled "The Orchestral Chord System For Guitar". This book is still in print and continues to be one of the best rhythm guitar chord books available! His "Modern Guitar Method" was authored soon thereafter. For many years Mel traveled from town to town talking to guitar teachers and players and showing them his publications. At one time Mel claims to have known virtually just about every guitar teacher in America on a first name basis! The guitar and Mel Bay's publications caught on in a big way in the 1950's. Things have continued to grow ever since.
Mel also used to retail D'Angelico jazz archtop guitars. At any given time he would have 5 or 6 "lying around the house." Mel played professionally on his D'Angelico New Yorker Model but his favorite guitar was the original Mel Bay Model constructed as a present for him by John D'Angelico. This well-known guitar had all of the main features of the New Yorker but was a "cutaway" model and had a somewhat thinner neck. This same instrument has been pictured on the Mel Bay "Modern Guitar Method" for decades.
Someone once calculated that sales of guitar publications written by Mel Bay have exceeded 25 million copies. When asked, Mel usually explained that he quit counting long ago. Sales of his "Modern Guitar Method" have alone passed the 7 million mark! It is safe to say that Mel Bay is one of the pivotal figures in the world of guitar music and instructional materials in this or any other century!
